I am a direct descendant of Marmaduke Lowson Whitton (1821-1889). Marmaduke was a notable East Ridings (Yorkshire) builder and on a wider scale a property developer who from time to time worked with his architect brother, James (1819-1903). James\'s architectural business was located in Lincoln, he died at Poulton-Le-Fylde (Lancashire) and buried in Beverley. Marmaduke is also buried in Beverley. I do not know about the family\'s link to a public political life in the region. Marmaduke\'s daughter, Mary Jane (my g-grandmother) married Charles Scholefield - a Master Railway Engineer from the West Ridings - they both lived in Beverley.

There is a book by Bremner, I think its called \"Hoy. The enchanted isle\".As I recall in it he describes the name Rich and Ritchie as having connections to the wreck of the Crown off Deerness in Orkney in which the Covenantors were being transported. A few managed to escape and settled in Orkney. However he states that it would take a Philadelphia lawyer to sort it all out. May be of some interest. Robin Smith 5 May 2010 |
To see a whitton family site is great. But our links are in Ireland, not Scotland. My great grandfather was Thomas Robert Whitton who lived in Bray, Ireland. It is proving very difficult to find out more information, so if any one has any suggestions, I\'d be grateful. Jeannette Longworth 13 January 2010 |

Just found my Great Grandfather on your site. His youngest son Jim, married Aileen Whitton, and your note that she was living in Arbroath is correct. I\'ve taken Robert Paton\'s genealogy back to 1800 and working on a Genoom site - have you consider using that tool? Scott Bell 30 November 2009 |

Hi, just stumbled across this site. I am related to William and Isabella\'s son Marmaduke Whitton, there daughter Rose Mary married John Eastwood. Rose Mary was my great grandmother x2 this branch of our family moved to South Africa where Rose Mary died and later some moved to Rhodesia. Hi. Have just found my GGGG Grandfather, John Laidlaw, on your website so have some more info for you. He was born 1792 approx in Portpatrick, and died there in 1888. He served on the kirk sessions for 40 years. His wife, Jane Johnstone, was born approx the same year and died 1864 in Portpatrick (they have the same gravestone in the kirkyard). Three of their sons were lighthouse keepers, and I\'m directly related through one of the daughters. Sarah Sarah Watmore 11 August 2009 |

I have a Robert James Cummings Lennox born c1909 - not sure where, but he lived in Canada. His father was John Scott Lennox. I have no other family names except that of his son, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He joined the Canadian Provost Corps in WW2 at Sunningdale Hospital, Toronto and was sent to the UK. He may well have changed to the Toronto Scottish at some point. We have a service number and have been able to verify that but are struggling to find anymore information.
His son has been looking for him or family for over 50 years.
If anyone has any thoughts they would be appreciated. CrystalFire 27 April 2009 |
Your site is amazing and certainly represents the passion you have for your roots.
My 2nd. great grandfather, William Joseph Whiitton and his wife Eleanor Ritchie came from Dundee, Scotland to Boston, MA in 1869. William died at age 41 in 1891 and perhaps 15 years later Eleanor returned to Dundee, Scotland where it is said her family owned a restaurant/bar. She died there in 1940. William is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester, MA. He worked for the Cunard Shipping Line for 21 years as a clerk. Their first son, William Ignatius Whitton was my great grandfather. He died in 1960. I was too young to ever ask him questions about his parents. I love genealogy and would like to know more about my Whitton Family. Sadly there is no one left alive in our family that I can ask. It is great just seeing a web site with the Whitton name.
Thank you,

I'm looking for info about a Georgina Whilton Swankie but the middle name may have been Whitton hence me leaving a message here.
Georginas family were apparently from Dundee and had fishing/whaling connections with Abroath and Carnoustie in Scotland ( my Grandad mentioned Abroath 'Smokies').
There were connections with Oglivy's I believe but whether these were family or close friends of the family I do not know.
Georgina sailed to the Falklands in the late 18oo's.
She married a Harry William Clark in 1892 from Kent. They had a son David who lived in Carnoustie as a boy, joining the navy under age.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Elsa Morgan 7 December 2008 |

Would love to hear back from you to share more information.

My granny was Catherine Lyon and she had a brother James and a sister Agnes, they had Graemsay connections but moved to Stromness and then Rousay.
Granny married Robert Grieve of Fadoon, Rousay and the Grieves are pretty well covered on Robert Marwick's web site.
She was related to Sammy Johnston who also had connections with Graemsay but lived on the Island of Hoy at the Muirs as a farmer when I knew him and retired and then moved to Longhope. Beryl Simpson nee' Gillespie 22 April 2007 |
