  • Notes
    • Elsie (Brindle) Brown of Deerfield passed away at age 97 on December 7, 2011. She was a long-time resident of Deerfield, and more recently of Granite Ledges in Concord, NH. Mrs. Brown was loved and admired by all for her very active life and vibrant personality, up until suffering a stroke December 1.

Mrs. Brown was born on August 7, 1914, in New Bedford, MA, the fifth of seven children. Her school years were spent in Westerly, RI, and she graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1937. At the university she was a star athlete and president of her sorority, Chi Omega.

Mrs. Brown majored in home economics and worked as a dietician and a home demonstration agent. While employed by the Federal Farm Security Administration in Massachusetts, she met her husband, Joseph T. Brown. They were married on August 2, 1941.

The Browns lived in Brockton and Concord, MA before retiring to the Brown family farm in Deerfield. A popular resident of the Town of Deerfield, Mrs. Brown was an active member of the Deerfield Community Church; a dedicated friend of the Philbrick-James Library; a supporter of the local school through involvement with the Forum of Citizens Uniting the School (FOCUS); a frequent blue ribbon winner for her breads, jams, and floral arrangements at the Deerfield Fair; and a contributor of numerous papers and artifacts to the Deerfield Historical Society. Although Mr. Brown died in 2002, Mrs. Brown remained involved in all of these activities, combining them with intense interest in her family.

Mrs. Brown cherished her three daughters: Susan (Mrs. John F. Smith) of Villanova, PA; Janet (Mrs. Roger W. Ritch) of Duxbury, MA; and Nancy (Mrs. Herbert G. McKinney) of Deerfield. In addition to her daughters and their husbands, she is survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mrs. Brown will be held at the Deerfield Community Church, UCC, at 15 Church Street, Deerfield, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 17. A reception will be held after the service in the church fellowship hall. Those who are unable to attend on Saturday are invited to greet the family during an open house at the Brown farm on the Deerfield Parade on Friday, December 16, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.
