Harold Burk "Papa" Ritch was born on August 21, 1923 in Elm Grove, Louisiana and died on May 17, 2012 at his home in Plano, Texas.
Papa grew up in the Elm Grove Community in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. Papa enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after Pearl Harbor and served as a machine gunner in the 102nd Ozark Mountain Division. He participated in the Rhineland Campaign where he was awarded the Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. In the winter of 1943, Papa returned to the United States for treatment and rehabilitation for his frozen feet at Fort Carson, Colorado. On his first morning, he awoke to see snow-covered Pikes Peak and immediately fell in love with Colorado and the Mountainous West. His love of the mountains would last a lifetime.
After his discharge, Papa attended LSU where he studied Petroleum Engineering and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Papa graduated from LSU in three years and accepted a job from Dow-well as District Engineer for South America and moved to Venezuela. In 1957, Papa happily married Patricia Devine and started a family resulting in six children and twelve grandchildren. In 1964, Papa left the oil industry for a more stable line of work, starting Ritch Air Conditioning which he operated with the help of the entire family.
His final years were spent in a long battle with Alzheimer's, which slowly took its toll. He never forgot his pride in his service to his country, that he was an LSU Tiger and his love for the mountains, especially Red River, New Mexico. Papa will be remembered by all for his devotion to his family, his love for God and his country and his wonderful sense of humor.
Papa was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Edward "Daddy Ed" Ritch and Annie Pearl Rogers "Mama Bill" Ritch, and by his brothers Harvey Ritch and Nabors Ritch and by his sister Eloise "Sissy" Marlar.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia Devine; his son Kurt David and wife Karen Elaine and of Longview, Texas and their children Kristen Elizabeth Ritch, Hannah Katherine Ritch and David Glenn Ritch; his daughter Juliana Ritch Copenhaver and husband Chris of Lufkin, Texas and their children Callie, Katie Parker and her husband Collin, and Chase Brooks Copenhaver; his daughter Karen Ritch Baier and husband Dennis of Lorena, Texas and their daughter Victoria Ruth Baier; his daughter Elizabeth Ritch and fiancé Rick Musil of Plano, Texas and her son Luke Alexander Ritch and her daughter Libbie Patricia Ritch ; his son Kevin Burk and wife Rhonda of Frisco, Texas and her daughter Cameron Fuvoye and her son Hunter Futvoye; and his son Franklin Edward and wife Valerie of Plano, Texas and their son Parker Cole Ritch.
The family wishes to offer special thanks to Matthew, Daniel and Estella for the loving care that they have provided for Papa during his illness.
