  • Notes
    • An inmate in the Bradford County Jail who told authorities she believed she was pregnant was found dead in her cell Friday and an autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death, the sheriff’s office reported.
The woman was identified as Tia Marie Sloama Ritch, 21, of 417 Davis St.
Ritch had been arrested on June 28 by the Starke Police Department on a charge of child neglect and was being held on a $2,500 bond, according to Capt. Brad Smith in a press release.
At about 6 a.m. Friday, Ritch was found unresponsive in her bed by jail staff. Emergency medical service personnel came to the jail and Ritch was pronounced dead a short time later. While being booked into the jail, Ritch told authorities she was taking prenatal vitamins and thought she may be about six weeks pregnant, Smith said. The on-duty nurse told her a pregnancy test would be conducted around the eighth week, which is normal procedure, he added. Early Friday morning, Ritch complained of dizziness and a stomach ache, Smith said. The on-call nurse was contacted and, after reviewing the situation, it was determined that isolation in a medical cell, increased fluids and hourly checks on the inmate would suffice, Smith said.
      Checks were documented at 1:40, 2, 3, 4 and 5 a.m.

They were visual checks but Ritch could be heard snoring during this time period, Smith said.
At 6 a.m. she was found unresponsive when deputies tried to serve her breakfast, Smith said. Sheriff’s detectives are investigating but do not suspect foul play, Smith said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been asked to conduct an independent investigation and the state Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
The doctor on contract with the Bradford County Jail will also be asked to submit a report on this incident, Smith said.
