Employed by his Uncle Bob Hardie in his shop in Galashiels, until his Uncles death in 1967 when he purchased the property at Croft Street from his Uncle's estate and then he purchased the house Tweedknowe at Abbotsford Road, Galashies near the shop about 1969 and his mother moved with him from 56 Kirk Brae
He was a Master Grocer, at the shop at 162 Croft Street Galashiels until his death in 1995. The last few years of trading were very poor but he continued to provide a service to older local inhabitants.

Buried with parents at Eastlands Galashiels. As Granny Whitton did not wish a gravestone on Granddad Whitton's grave, when Granny died there was no stone erected. But when Uncle Bill died my father and I agreed that Bill should have a stone with the inscription mentioning both their parents.
