    • Manawatu District Aero Club
      An Aero Club is Born

It was natural that these early events coupled with aviation history of the First World War, would stimulate considerable local interest in flying which inspired some into the holding of a meeting on the 20th November, 1928 of those who were 'desirous to promote flying'. The meeting was chaired by Mr Matthew Elliott, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and the well-attended meeting was addressed by Mr M.H. Oram (later Sir). This resulted in a decision to form an Aero Club for the Manawatu. The club's first executive was: as Patron - James Nash local M.P.; President - Matthew Oram; Vice-President - Mr Meldrum Elliott; interim committee were Henry Collinson, Henry Burrell, G. Scott Hamilton, Gordon Dixon, Robert Linklater, G. Pettigrew, Alexander Anderson, Harry Carter, Major F. Potter and secretary - William McKenzie. The initial 55 acres of land at that time was covered in rushes and a plantation of trees bisected the area. The task of clearing this land and preparing it was given to Mr Robert Linklater who provided his own tractor and plant. He was also successful in borrowing a large Caterpillar tractor from the then agents, A. S. Patterson and Coy. Mr Herbert Edmunds did sterling work in obtaining guarantees from many interested firms and individuals for the provision of fuel, seed, and other supplies, and Mr Linklater was inundated with enthusiastic supporters who wished to help.
