  • Notes
    • at 1881 census at Malt House Close, Dundee, Forfar

Her last name is given as Whitton by Jemima K. Chalmers in her letter of 16 April 1957 to David Gardner Banks and by Isobel (Banks) Seger in her letter of 30 March 1957 to David Gardner Banks and in the birth record of her son, David Banks. In the death record of her widower, James Banks and in her own death record, as reported by Maggie C. Sinclair with her letter of 4 June 1989 to David Gardner Banks, Agnes' last name is given as Whittet. Because official records are not consistent, we shall follow family tradition and use the form Whitton.
The date of her death is given as 20 January 1891 in her death record, as reported by Maggie C. Sinclair with her letter of 4 June 1989 to David Gardner Banks. The last digit in the year of her death as reported by Jemima K. Chlmers in her letter to David Gardner Banks, namely 20 January 1899, must be incorrect--perhaps hard to read in the Bible--since the 1891 census lists James Banks as a widower in that year.
The approximate date of her birth would be 1828 if calculated from her age at death (62) recorded in her death record, as reported by Maggie C. Sinclair. This would, however, make her 13 years old when her first child was born. Hence the date calculated from the 1851 census, also reported by Maggie C. Sinclair, would seem much more likely. The census records her as 34 years old then, which would put her birth year about 1817--possibly 1816 since the ages of the children listed in the census suggest it was taken near the beginning of the year. That would also make her about two years younger than her husband, which seems very much more likely.
The place of her birth is also given in the 1851 census as reported by Maggie C. Sinclair with her letter of 4 June 1989 to David Gardner Banks.
She died of a disease of the liver after 2(?) months illness, according to her death record.
Again, according to her death record, she was the daughter of Robert and Catherine (Donnet) Whittet. The information in her death record was furnished by her son William Banks, of 2 Small's Lane, Dundee.
