    • PALM VALLEY - Vernon Lyle DeBolt, Jr. "Lyle", 83, died on Saturday October 22, 2016 at his home in Palm Valley, TX.

      Lyle was born in Duluth, Minnesota on October 5, 1933 to Vernon Lyle DeBolt, Sr. and Hilma (Bobbie) Moline. He was an older brother to Marvin and Dwight DeBolt. Lyle married Paula Whitton DeBolt, the love of his life, in San Augustine, TX in 1955. They were married for 63 years.

      Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Lyle moved to Odessa, TX in 1947 at age 13. He was a 1951 graduate of Odessa High School and a graduate of North Texas State University. In 1955 Lyle was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force and received his wings at Big Springs Air Force Base as a fighter pilot. He was stationed in Dover, Delaware to protect Washington D.C. and New York City. He was released from active duty in December 1957 and advanced to the rank of major in the Air Force Reserves.

      After serving in the U. S. Air Force, Lyle joined the staff of the First National Bank of Odessa, TX. He was vice president of the bank when he resigned in 1971 to join Freedom Newspapers, Inc. Lyle worked as the general manager of the Kinston (NC) Free Press and publisher of the Odessa (TX) American before becoming publisher of the Valley Morning Star in 1980. He was a vice president of Freedom Communications Inc. and oversaw the three Valley newspapers which included the Brownsville Herald and McAllen Monitor. He retired on December 31, 1998.

      Lyle loved to hunt and play golf. He had a warm, gracious personality and infectious smile that would warm up any room he entered. He never met a stranger and made people feel like good friends even if they had just met.

      Lyle was a member of the Harlingen Rotary Club and served on the board of directors of many cultural and civic organizations including: Texas Daily Newspaper Association, Texas Tourist Council, Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, InterFirst Bank of Harlingen, Salvation Army, Literacy Center, Gladys Porter Zoo, Life Begins at 40, St. Paul Lutheran Church, First National Bank of Odessa, Odessa Family YMCA, Odessa Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Odessa, Odessa Day Nursery, Odessa Boys Club, Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center, Midland-Odessa Symphony Association, Permian Basin Arthritis Foundation, Chuck Wagon Gang, Friends of the Library, Crystal Ball Foundation, Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Odessa Jaycees (Key Man Award in 1964).

      Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Bobbie DeBolt and his brother Dwight DeBolt.

      Lyle is survived by his wife of 63 years, Paula Jane Whitton DeBolt, one brother, Marvin (Carol Ann) DeBolt of Destin, FL., one sister-in-law, Margie DeBolt of Ft. Pierce, FL, two sons, Vernon (Ellice) DeBolt of New Bern, NC and Paul (Christine) DeBolt of McAllen, TX, and three granddaughters: Lauren (David) Lenn of Swansboro, NC, Sarah DeBolt of New York, NY and Catherine DeBolt of San Francisco, CA.
