  • Notes
    • Greenup Whitton, a Pioneer Dies at an Advanced Age
Greenup Whitton, the oldest pioneer in Napa county, died suddenly on his ranch near Yountville one day last week. He was born in Missouri nearly ninety-six years ago. He came to this State in 1849, settled near Yountville and lived there ever since.
He was contemporaneous with the late George C. Yount and the late Charles Hopper, and was fond of relating his experiences with these hardy pioneers in the early days when Napa valley was a wilderness, hardly touched by the hand of civilization. He was the last of his generation, a sterling man, truly representative of the sturdy stock from which he came.
He was the father of three children, only one of whom survives-Mrs. Allie Grigsby of St. Helena-his sons, Theodore Whitton and Charles Whitton, having passed from this life several years ago. There are several grandchildren, among them being Irving Whitton, now with the American forces in Siberia.
