    • Smith, Albert Byrl 11/26/1926 ~ 05/18/2015 SAN DIEGO - Albert Byrl Smith lived a full life devoted to his marriage, family, friends and his Catholic faith. Born on November 26, 1926 to Owen Royal and Ethel Joe Smith, he grew up in Milford, Utah with his sister, Rosalie and his brothers, Owen and John. Al graduated from Milford High School. He attended the University of Utah where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering and Master of Science Degree in Physical Metallurgy. At the University of Utah Newman Center, he met Mary Colette Bolte who was studying at the University. They fell in love and were married on October 7, 1950. Their early years were spent in Utah and Nevada. Al worked for Bush & Gudgell, Titanium Metals and Thiokol. They moved to San Diego in 1967 where they raised their children, welcomed their grandchildren, and spent their golden years together. Al worked for General Atomic and Convair as a Metallurgical Engineer. After retirement, he stayed active by volunteering for the SDPD RSVP and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Al is survived by his three children, Valerie Smith Geis (Steve), Ken Smith (Eleanor), and Janelle Smith Whitton (Michael); and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Colette; and son, David Smith. He delighted in his six grandchildren: David and Brian Geis, Stevon Travis (Michelle), and Garrett, Colette, and Gage Whitton; and two great-grandchildren, Micah and Elias Travis. He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.
