      Lavern "Vern" Whitton, 88, of South Jacksonville, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at the Passavant Hospital Transitional Care Unit in Jacksonville.

      He was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Bartonville, the son of Cecil Lavern Sr. and Mame DeOrnellas Whitton. He married Louise Pierce Catalano and she survives.

      He is also survived by a son, Steven Whitton (wife, Beverly) of Jacksonville; three stepchildren, Gary L. DeFrates and Janet Y. Morris, both of Jacksonville, and Wanda R. Zahner (husband, Ben) of Petersburg; a granddaughter, Kristin Kovacek of Gurnee; 9 step-grandchildren, Melissa, Lynnsay, Greg, Rick, Scott, Mark, Brian, Jason and Jerry; several step-great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a half brother, Cecil E. Whitton (wife, Patsy) of Morton; several nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Marie Fortado-Justus of Jacksonville.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathy Ann Kovacek (surviving husband, Duane, of Gurnee); a half-brother, Jessie Whitton; and the mother of his children, Mildred Wheeler Whitton.

      Vern served with the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the LST 584 in the Pacific Theater. He was the last surviving shipmate from the LST 584. He returned to Jacksonville to serve 52 years as a pressman for the Jacksonville Journal-Courier, retiring in 1995. During the 1950s and 1960s, Vern maintained a well-known part-time business, Whitton's Radio and TV Repair, in the Jacksonville area. He was a member of Calvary Temple in Springfield and a life member of the Jacksonville Elks Club and VFW Post 1379. He was a former member of the Jacksonville Moose Lodge.

      Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, south of Jacksonville. The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to the South Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Squad.
