POQUOSON — An elderly, disabled woman lost her home and all her possessions Monday when fire destroyed her apartment and damaged three adjacent apartments, leaving a total of least five people homeless.

Anna Fiese, 63, was at City Hall renewing her lease on the two-bedroom apartment at 500 Wythe Creek Road when the fire started shortly after noon. The one-story brick-veneer apartments are next door to the Poquoson Discount Pharmacy.

``When I came back, I saw smoke coming out of the roof,'' a teary-eyed Fiese said as she stood with relatives watching firefighters knock pieces of the charred roof away.

Fiese, who lives alone, said she tried to enter the apartment but was pushed back by the heavy smoke. ``When I opened the storm door, it was all black,'' Fiese said. She said she heard glass popping from the heat.

Fiese said she then ran to Apt. 2 to alert Beaulah Hubbard, her 76-year-old neighbor. ``I told her to call the fire department. She was in her living room watching TV. She didn't know anything at the time,'' Fiese said.

In addition to her possessions, Fiese said she lost her medication and pocketbook containing all her money - a total of $140. Fiese says she suffers from lung cancer and is completely reliant on her monthly Social Security check, $47 monthly food stamp allotment and Medicaid payments.

Because the apartment is under the Section 8 housing subsidy program, three-fourths of her rent is paid by the federal government, she said.

Poquoson Fire Lt. Robert Holloway said the city has asked the state to assist in investigating the blaze. He estimated the loss to building and contents at more than $100,000.
