    • General editor of Newsweek magazine and a former managing editor of The Times-Dispatch.
      Attended Richmond public schools and the College of William and Mary.He received the degrees of bachelor of science and master of arts from the University of Virginia.

      He worked on The News Leader as a reporter and copy editor before joining The Times-Dispatch where he was managing editor from 1928 until 1933.
      He resigned to work for several months in 1934 for the Washington Enening Star before becoming editor-in-chief of the Charlottesville Daily Progress.
      In 1937,he joined the staff of the New York Journal.Later he moved into the advertising field,serving as a copywriter for the J.M.Mathes Agency and as an executive with a division of Union Carbide Corp.

      In 1950 he joined Collier's magazine as senior article editor,supervised many of the magazine's major editorial projects.
      In 1953 he left Collier's to join Newsweek as business editor and a national affairs writer.
      Was coauther with his wife of a book called "Books & Battles".
      Married Irene Hasbrook.
      Son of William H.Cleaton,brother of Mrs.J.R.Dixon,William H.Cleaton,Jr and Grayson Cleaton,all of Richmond.
