      Much was made in late 20th-century Canadian social histories out of Governor Caldwell’s handling of a court case which resulted in a guilty verdict levied against HBC mess steward John Davidson and “his English wife,” as well as HBC clerk Augustus Edward Pelly and his wife, Anne Rose Clouston (of the village of Stromness, Orkney) — all of whom slandered Chief Factor Ballenden’s wife, Sarah McLeod (a Métis woman).
