      He was the son of Senator Adrian Norton Knatchbull Hugessen (served 1937-1967). He studied engineering at McGill University. He worked as a consultant helping companies to standardize production in Africa, Malaysia and Columbia. Later he switched to teaching engineering at l?Universit? de Montr?al. He was a member of the Canadian Olympic sailing team for the Helsinki games in 1952.

      He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate UNTD) RCNVR 1944. He served in HMCS Donnacona for UNTD 1944. (He was released.)
