      a Correspondant writes about the death of Peter Whitton a native of Methven who was crossing the River Teesta during the time of disatrus floods when the boat was swamped. He had been born on the Methven Castle estate where his father had been Head Gardener for nearly 50 years. He learned his trade as a Gardener serving time on the Methven Castle estate. After he was employed for a few years at Whittinghame, the seat of A J Balfour. Then he got an appointment in the services of Finlay, Muir and Company of Glasgow in connection with their large tea estaes in India. He travelled acoss large parts of India laying out new gardens. In about 1892 he was appointed Chief Superintendant of the whole estates. In 1898 he had visited his brother John at Simla Cottage, Craigie, Perth
      He is survived by a widow
