- MERSMAN Sergeant Jeffery Scott Mersman, age 23, of Parker, Kansas, formerly of Lane, Kansas, died on Friday, November 9, 2007, in Aranus, Afghanistan. Jeff was born May 11, 1984, in Paola, Kansas, to Robert Augustine and Mary Darline (Wisdom) Mersman. He attended kindergarten and first grade in Parker, Kansas. From second grade through his sophomore year of high school, he attended Central Heights School. His last two years of high school were at Prairie View High School. He graduated in 2002. Jeff served his country with the United States Army. His Army training began in February of 2002 at Fort Benning, Georgia. He graduated from training in May of 2002 and then went to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He went through paratrooper school at Fort Bragg and graduated from there in August of 2002. Jeff served four tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. He was stationed in Italy in May of 2007 for six months prior to his last tour in Afghanistan. He was in a six man unit in Afghanistan on Friday and they were ambushed from three sides. While stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Jeff met Narcissa "Lynn" Sanchez. They were married on December 4, 2004, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Jeff was very active with family and community activities while growing up and he knew no stranger. Jeff let his family know at an early age that he planned to serve his country by joining the Army. When not busy helping family and friends, Jeff enjoyed hunting, fishing and mud trucking. He was a member of the VFW in Garnett. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Lane, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Marvin Mersman, his maternal grandparents, Walter Leroy Wisdom, Sr., and Mary Ann Tennis. He is survived by his wife Narcissa "Lynn" of Italy; his father Robert Mersman of Gardner; his mother and stepfather Mary Darline and Chris Ritch of Parker; his paternal grandmother Carol Jane Mersman of Garnett; his maternal grandparents Bonnie McMechan and Raymond Poage of Fontana; his maternal great grandmother Evelyn Purdy of Amoret, Missouri; a stepson, David, Jr.; three stepdaughters, Keani, Davilyn, and Desiree; two brothers, John Michael Mersman of Homewood, New Mexico and Eric Leigh Mersman of Garnett; one stepbrother, Zachary Elish Ritch of Paola; three sisters, Shannon Renee Mersman and Kayla Nichole Ritch, both of Parker, Bobbie Lee Miller of Lane, and other relatives and friends.
