    • MASSENA - Mrs. Sylvia D. Whitton, 83, of Dana Street, peacefully passed away early Sunday morning, February 25, 2018 at her home with her loving family at her side.

Sylvia was born April 16, 1934 in Massena, the daughter of the late John and Immaculata (Memoli) D’Arienzo and was a 1952 graduate of Massena High School. On December 31, 1954, she married Dewey C. Whitton at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

After her marriage, she was a stay at home mom raising 4 children, and later worked for St. Lawrence Gas Company until her retirement after many years of service. After retirement, she and her husband, Dewey, built a camp in Waddington where they cherished the love of family and friends visiting. Sylvia also loved the time she was able to spend with her family, especially her grandchildren. She had a great passion for cooking and will be fondly remembered for her sauce and meatballs.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Dewey; her children and their spouses, Jeff and Mary Lisa Whitton of Massena; Tim and Sandy Whitton of Aurora, Colorado; Mary Mem and James Ward of Massena; and Janie and Roger Forando of Granville; her beloved grandchildren, Jen and her husband, Jared; Lauren and her husband, Luke; Taylor, Hannah, Samantha, Jeremy, Memoli, Thomas, Christopher and his wife, Kathleen; Ryan and his wife, Stephanie; and Brett and his wife, Ashley. She was also blessed with and survived by her great grandchildren, Lauren, Aydan, Liam, Brodie, Cody, and Gianna. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Rose Stefantos, Mamie Kennedy, Amelia Burkhalter Grow, Ann Serabian, Virginia Wilkins, and Mary E. Romeo; and her brothers, Matthew J., James M., Alfonso “Fudgy”, Tony, Louie, and Joseph D’Arienzo.
